Paula Elizabeth: Modern Shaman
For the first episode of Women in a Day, we spoke with Modern Shaman, Paula Elizabeth. Paula offers guidance to many people through her work as an intuitive and her group Shaman Star, a year long collection of teachings for those who want to bring the teachings of shamanism into their lives. We couldn't think of a better note to start our podcast on than Paula's message of bringing empathy and compassion to everyone around us, and to ourselves. WD: You're in Denver, but what is your advice to people if they're looking for a group like this wherever they live?
PE: Well, first off, you're unique and the group you find will be unique to you but it is important to have a sacred community. In Buddhism they say, "the Buddha, the dharma and the sangha, 'sangha' being the community." You really need a group of people that speak your language so to speak. That you can go around and feel, "they get me." We are social animals. You need your time in solitude, you need your time with your group. Our group is very important with that and in our Shaman Star class, after you finish the class there is a Council, the Council is ongoing so that you always have that touchstone. That you can come back and these people speak your language, they have their goals in the world which we call 'acts of power' they get out there, they come back and they share with their community. I would look for a group that made you feel that way - special, unique, it's focusing on your gifts, your talents and yet when you go there, there's a sense of homecoming. Everything we do is sacred, your community should help you see the sacredness, doesn't matter if you're a barista, a psychotherapist, a surgeon...you are doing a sacred task if you decide to be.
"We MUST bring certainty and authenticity to the work we do if we want it to connect with others, or it is just a mental exercise."
